#RockOneSock challenge raises awareness about missing children
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children launched an online challenge Wednesday to raise awareness on National Missing Children’s Day.
The Rock One Sock challenge is meant to bring attention to the thousands of missing children nationwide and to show support for their families. Participants are encouraged to wear one sock and post a photo on social media with the hashtag #RockOneSock.
“That way people will maybe say, ‘Why are you only wearing one sock?’ ‘Well I’m missing the other one, like you’re missing a child in your family,'” said Bernice Abeyta, whose son went missing 30 years ago.
Christopher Abeyta was taken from his crib when he was seven and a half months old. Bernice Abeyta said by now he probably has his own life and his own family. She said she doesn’t want to interrupt his life, but she would like answers.
“I just recently found out I have cancer, if not for my sake, I’d like my children to not have to go through this any longer,” she said. “If I’m gone, I don’t want this to fall on my children forever.”
Bernice Abeyta and her family are participating in the #RockOneSock challenge, because they said any attention to missing children is good. They hope it’ll encourage others to look through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website, and if they have any information that could help bring any of the children home, to speak up.
