Mumford’s the word at Pueblo Zoo

The Pueblo Zoo’s newest lion cub officially has a name, with a little help from the community.

The zoo held a naming contest in partnership with The Pueblo Chieftain. More than 800 names were suggested.

Zookeepers then selected their top picks and zoo members who are subscribers to the Pueblo Zoo’s E-ZooNews voted in an online poll.

The winner? Mumford.

The surname Mumford is of French origin and the ancient coat of arms has a blue lion salient on a gold field. Mumford is also part of the name of a famous rock band, Mumford & Sons, which has a recent song entitled “Little Lion Man”.

Other names that were considered included Hasani, Hamadi and Faraji.

Mumford is now on exhibit daily with his parents, Mashavu and Taz.

The male lion cub is the first in 10 years at the Pueblo Zoo. He was born back in January.
