UPDATE: Evacuations lifted after ‘all clear’ given at DIA
The Denver Police Department evacuated a portion of the main terminal at DIA Tuesday because of a security scare.
A K-9 detected something suspicious about several packages. The Denver Police Department’s bomb squad evaluated the packages and determined they were not dangerous.
“They basically just said everybody move, you have to move now,” said evacuated passenger Andy Lowen. “They didn’t really tell us anything, so everybody just listened and did what they were told,” he said.
“It looked like a couple of big card board boxes. Other than that, we didn’t see a whole lot. It just looked like a couple of boxes,” said evacuated passenger Karl Kuersteiner.
The evacuation area included the west side of the main terminal on levels 5 and 6 between doors 600 and 610.
The level five baggage claim on the west side of the terminal was closed.
No vehicle traffic was allowed on the west side of the terminal. The east side remained open to passengers.
Affected ticket counters included American, Aero Mexico, Air Canada, Lufthansa and British Airways.
The terrorist attacks in Brussels were on the minds of passengers making their way through DIA.
“I think everyone was on a heightened state of alert so I think they dealt with it appropriately it. I appreciate the security folks here that took care of the problem,” said Kuersteiner.
“I think it’s scary. It’s very very alarming and everyone just needs to be careful and I am glad everyone is taking extra precautions and we are all safe and we can be in here right now so they obviously solved the problem,” said Holly Manning.
“It’s never a bad thing to be too safe but it does obviously cause people, such as us over there, to change our flights. I hope it’s for the better,” said Hunter Fleek.
There were some delays. You should check with your airline if you plan to fly from or to DIA tonight.
