Man makes it his mission to honor military heroes, makes a stop in Southern Colorado
A man traveling across the country says he’s on a crusade for our military heroes and giving them the thanks they deserve.
Michael William Emery is determined to keep the legacy of his uncle, Seaman 1st Class William Emery, alive.
William Emery served in the navy as a crew member on the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
More importantly, he was someone Michael looked up to.
“Everyone deserves to have a hero in their life. My uncle is my hero… but really the 1,196 men on the Indy (were) all my heroes,” said Michael.
The U.S.S. Indianapolis was a heavy cruiser in a top-secret mission in WWII.
But a little more than 70 years ago, in July of 1945, the ship sank. More than 800 men lost their lives.
“The price of freedom comes from paying the ultimate sacrifice as my uncle did,” Michael explained.
That’s why he’s traveling across the nation, telling his story through public speaking. He also has a mission in mind: paying respects to veterans.
“I’m hoping that every time someone thinks about a loved one who was lost in the war or current servicemen, that they go up to them and shake their hand and say, ‘Thank you for your service.’ Those 5 words are so important,” Michael said.
