People pack church to discuss proposed land swap between Colorado Springs, Broadmoor Hotel
People packed inside a Colorado Springs church to hear arguments from both sides over a proposed land swap between the city of Colorado Springs and the Broadmoor.
If approved, the city would gain about 360 acres from the hotel. In exchange, the hotel would get a recreation area known as Strawberry Fields. Strawberry Fields, also known as Strawberry Hill, has been the hot button in the debate over the swap.
At Monday’s meeting, Councilman Keith King served as moderator while opponents and supporters of the exchange had an opportunity to ask questions of both sides.
Former City Councilman and downtown business over Richard Skorman represented the group opposed to the swap.
“I don’t want to see the Broadmoor own it, I want to see the public own it,” said Skorman.
Supporters of the exchange argue that Strawberry Fields isn’t well maintained by the city and it will be better cared for by the Broadmoor. In the swap, the city would receive private land near the Manitou Incline and Barr Trail, solidifying its accessibility to the public.
“People tend to love the land a little too much and we impact it and I think under this swap, we will actually have the opportunity to protect the land and conserve it,” said Johnny Walker.
“This is good for the community because it’s going to increase our open space and trail access,” said Kyle Hybl.
But opponents argue the city isn’t getting a fair deal and say the piece of land it’s given up is invaluable to its residents. Opponents also worry about the Broadmoor’s plans to put a boutique stable and picnic area on the land.
“I’m sure they will do a great job but that’s irrelevant. This land is not up for sale. It’s been a part of Cheyenne Caonfor 140 years,” said Julie Mcintyre.
“There is really no reason to see one of the jewels of the southwest corner of Colorado Springs go to a private entity. In the end, that’s what it is,” said Rick Meinig.
There will be another public meeting on March 30 at Gold Camp Elementary School.
