Update: One killed in trooper-involved shooting in Colorado City
One man is dead after a trooper-involved shooting in Colorado City Thursday night.
It happened at a gas station off of I-25 near exit 74 at around 8 p.m. Thursday.
The trooper was not hurt.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation says the shooting happened during a traffic stop. It says the driver of a vehicle that had been pulled over jumped out, stole a vehicle in the gas station parking lot and then accelerated toward the trooper who opened fire.
There was also a female passenger in the vehicle that was pulled over. No names have been released.
Restaurant owner Gwen Obert said a normal night of work turned into a nightmare.
“We found out that someone had tried to evade the cops and got shot,” she said.
Former Westminster police officer Brooks Howard said the recovery process is just beginning for the trooper who shot the man.
“It’s very traumatic. They will send you to a psychologist before you can return to work. You’re obviously concerned you’re not going to have charges filed on you,” he said.
Howard said pulling the trigger is an officer’s last resort.
“Police do not want to shooting people, unless you obviously absolutely have to defend yourself or someone else, especially under today’s climate,” he said.
The shooting is being investigated by the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team, which includes the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
