Colorado may set up vaccine database to track kids
A new Colorado database tracking kids who have not been vaccinated is moving ahead in the state Legislature.
But the measure approved Thursday faces stiff opposition. Republicans gave the bill spirited opposition, saying a database could open the door to shaming parents who have opted not to vaccinate their children.
Colorado has some of the nation’s loosest rules for avoiding required vaccines. Parents must simply state that they have a medical, moral or religious objection, after which their kids may attend public schools.
Democratic sponsors say vaccine exemptions should be tracked by state health authorities, not school nurses.
The proposal passed the Democratic House on a voice vote but faces more debate before heading to the GOP Senate.
