Why is the wind so strong?

The wind continues to be a big story.

One of the reasons that we have so much wind has to do with the mountains.

That’s what brought Jules Thacker and Christian Parker to Colorado. They’re newcomers to the state.

Thacker said, “It’s so beautiful. I love Colorado, I don’t think I could ever go back to the rain in Georgia.”

When it comes to weather, there’s one major difference.

“It’s pretty intense wind when it gets going,” said Thacker.

Justin Wood may be a Colorado Springs native, but wind like this is still something he can’t ignore.

“As far as weather goes it’s not my favorite to be around in,” he said.

The wind is a constant and it has good and bad sides.

You can see how the wind dries things out by looking at the trees and grasses. But another thing the wind does is warm things up, especially when it comes out of the mountains.

In the right conditions, gusty winds in the middle of the atmosphere are brought to the surface.

As those winds rush out of the mountains, they get squeezed and warm up, adding another element to the Colorado weather mix.

Parker said, “It’s really crazy how you can be in a T-shirt and then when the sun goes down it gets really cold.”

Of course the major down side to this wind is the fire danger, which is no secret to people who have been here for a long time.

“Seeing how dry it is this year, the fire danger could be pretty bad,” said Wood.

And something we’ll all have to deal with when it’s so windy and dry.
