3rd soldier pleads guilty to money crimes at Afghan base

An Army captain has become at least the third soldier stationed at a bustling Afghan air base to plead guilty to financial crimes in a North Carolina court.

Capt. David Anthony Kline of Colorado Springs, Colorado, pleaded guilty in federal court in Raleigh on Thursday to taking $50,000 in bribes. Prosecutors say he took money from an Afghan trucking company owner for transportation contracts.

Former Staff Sgt. Robert Green was sentenced last week to 10 months in prison for taking $45,000 from an Afghan businessman who got Army transportation contracts during the same 17 month period ending in 2009.

Prosecutors say Green’s case was related to the crimes of former Staff Sgt. Tonya Long, who was sentenced to five years in prison for smuggling $1 million into the United States.
