Caon City rejects road tax
Voters in Caon City rejected a sales tax that would have raised a projected $3.5 million for roads.
Referendum 2-C would have imposed a 1 percent sales tax.
The vote was 51 percent against and 49 percent for, with the margin a slim 108 votes.
People who we spoke to Wednesday came down on both sides of the issue, with those in favor of the tax hoping that the city will try another measure in the future.
One proponent offered a theory as to why the referendum failed.
“Money. That’s always the bottom line is people want things to be nice but I’m not sure they want to pay for it,” said Sandie Hall.
One of the main concerns among opponents was that there was no sunset provision in the tax.
