Manhunt underway for fugitive last seen in Custer County

The Walsenburg Police Department says a search is underway for a wanted man who escaped capture during a two-county chase Monday.

Walsenburg Police first encountered Michael Jackson, 33, at around 3 p.m. Monday (10/26/15) when they responded to a report of domestic violence involving a gun at a campground on the north side of town.

When officers arrived, police say Jackson drove away in a white pickup.

Jackson’s truck was spotted by Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office deputies about 15 minutes later on Highway 69, but he once again got a way.

John Mall High School, Peakview and Gardner Schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Deputies chased the truck west on Highway 69 to the Custer County Line. State Patrol and the Custer County Sheriff’s Office joined in the chase.

Walsenburg Police say Jackson once again eluded law enforcement. The truck was found abandoned about three miles up a mountain road.

Walsenburg Police K-9, Caon City Police K-9, Department of Corrections K-9 and an aircraft were called in to search for Jackson. Due to the tough terrain and the darkness the search was called off at about 9 p.m.

Police say Jackson is wanted on five warrants out of Pueblo County, two of them for felonies. The Walsenburg Police Department says it also plans to issue warrants. Jackson faces domestic violence and felony-related charges there.

Michael Jackson should be considered armed and dangerous. He has Hazel eyes and several tattoos on his neck and arms. Call 911 if you see him.
