Grass fire burns 400 acres in Huerfano County

Huerfano Emergency Dispatch and Emergency Management says gusty winds and dry conditions fueled a fire near La Veta Thursday.

The fire was initially reported as several small grass fires along Highway 160 at approximately milepost 291. The fires, which were reported at 9:55 a.m., grew to 400 acres.

Fire units from La Veta and Huerfano County responded to the fire. The first units to respond reported that three structures were threatened and that they were actively protecting those buildings.

Road graders were brought in from the county to establish a fire line around the fire. The fire line was completed at around 11:45 a.m., but hot spots and flare ups remain, so the fire has not yet been declared contained.

No structures have been damaged and no injuries have been reported.

Law Enforcement Officers from Huerfano County, La Veta and Colorado State Patrol assisted at the scene.
