Open house tonight to update bridge replacement project

The City of Colorado Springs is moving forward with a sinkhole repair turned bridge replacement project on Chestnut Street.

A large sinkhole opened up on the bridge deck between Vondelpark Drive and Ellston Street following a heavy rain storm on August 10.

The city decided it would be more cost effective to replace the bridge instead of simply patching the hole. The bridge was originally scheduled to be replaced in 2019 using money from the Pikes Peak Rural Tranportation Authority. The RTA board approved accelerating the project and a contractor was hired to design the new structure.

Conceptual designs of the proposed replacement options will be presented to the public at an open house on October 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Springs Journey Church, 1250 Vondelpark Drive. A tentative construction timeline will also be announced.
