Colorado Springs Utilities warns about new scam
hits the region. tonight we have the information to help keep your money safe. good evening and thanks for joing us. i’m heather skold. and i’m james jarman. first tonight, another scam we need to tell you about in southern colorado. this one involves crooks calling about your utility bill. colorado springs utilities say they’ve had at least 25 calls about scammers demanding payment – in just the last three days. this comes after we told you about a different scam last night. police say this man pretended to be a best buy employee in colorado springs and took off with a customer’s cash – 12-hundred dollars of it. we’ve learned the suspect’s done the same thing in texas. springs police are now working on an arrest warrant. krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller has this target 13 alert .. to keep your money safe. james, heather, you can blame technology, or clever cover- stories… this latest scam is prying on colorado springs utilities customers. it’s one in a series of scams we’ve seen in the past few days. brittneya?c]c]c? c]c?c]c?c] amador has gotten strange phone calls before. sot: they couldn’t tell me the company they worked for, who they were working for. the army vet even fell victim to a jewlery scam once herself. so when she heard about this latest scam, where a caller demands utilities customers pay their bills with a prepaid credit cardit, she immediately saw red flags. sot: no, no, i wouldn’t trust that at all, at all. sot: colorado springs utilities would never ask a customer to pay with a pre-paid credit card. greg: csu says it’s not the first time, but rate of scamming incidents is definitely rising. last month, a colorado springs woman was approached by two men who claimed to be utility workers. they came into her home pretending to do repair work, but stole 14- thousand dollars in jewlery. sot:you shouldn’t open the door for anybody, no matter how good it looks, the company. and this week, a man named “roy” ha offered discounts for tech products if they paid in cash. but police say he leaves before delivery. ?? sot: my heart ?c?c?c dropped, it was a sick feeling, i already had a feeling, so… how do you stop from falling victim? sot: sot: if they’re trying non-stop with you, that’s a scam. and as the saying goes – if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. >? that background research very critical – in the case of utilities, check your bills and your accounts online, or call the company so you know is authentic before making any payments. cs, gm, nc 13. and we learned about that fake
