Colorado college sued for denying Bible-themed donor plaque
A graduate of a Colorado university who wanted to cite Bible verses on a football locker-room plaque for a donation he made is suing his alma mater for rejecting his request.
Michael Lucas wanted a nameplate recognizing his $2,500 donation earlier this year to have Colossians 3:23 and Micah 5:9. But the Colorado School of Mines says doing so would violate the separation of church and state, according to a federal lawsuit filed last week.
Lucas argues what he wanted constitutes private speech protected by the First Amendment.
University officials say they can’t support or promote one faith or belief over others. They have until Dec. 1 to respond to the lawsuit.
Lucas still got a plaque, but quoting one of the Bible passages without listing the actual citation.
