Streets division is getting ready for more snow
The snow is back after a brief absence and the plow trucks will be rolling.
The biggest problem is that some of the side roads are still snow packed. Add the snow that we’re getting tonight, and it will be a mess.
Corey Farkas may be with the Colorado Springs streets division, but his reaction to the forecast is probably a lot like yours.
“We;re not done cleaning up from the last one yet,” he said.
We’re expecting to see a lot more snow over the next day or so.
“We expect that if the need arises tonight to have a full call out, then we will do so,” said Farkas.
The city has about 40 trucks available to hit the roads tonight and tomorrow morning. And there are a lot of roads to deal with.
Farkas said, “we have over 5,600 lane miles of roads.”
The city has already picked up more than a foot of snow this month. Almost half of that within the last few days.
That means that some of the side streets are still snow covered.
“We were city wide this time. All 200 square miles were being blasted and blasted pretty hard,” said Farkas.
The biggest fight for road crews will be with the temperatures and wind – and the impact that will have on the mix used on the roads.
“Wind is a big factor, temperatures obviously, how much snow we get and what we call dilution of the solution,” said Farkas.
Dilution of the solution happens when the ice melts after the mix of sand and salt is put down on the roads. That dilutes the mixture and as the temperatures fall it refreezes.
The best thing that you can do is to be patient and give the crews the space that they need to get the job done.
