Government drone limits face rocky future in Colorado
A Colorado proposal to limit drone surveillance by law enforcement appears headed for defeat after a raft of government officials lined up to oppose it.
The Senate Judiciary Committee has delayed final action on the drone bill until Wednesday.
The bill limits how government agencies can use drones, formally called “unmanned aerial vehicles.”
The bill would require law enforcement to have a warrant before using a drone in many cases, unless there is imminent threat to life or risk of a terrorist attack. The bill also bans government drones from using of “facial recognition technology.”
The bill wouldn’t apply to private and commercial drones. But several government and private-sector drone experts told lawmakers Tuesday that the bill still goes too far.
