Colorado Springs man pleads guilty to heroin charge in New Mexico
A Colorado man has pleaded guilty to a heroin trafficking charge in New Mexico.
Federal prosecutors say 39-year-old Martin Pelayo, of Colorado Springs, entered a plea agreement Tuesday and will face up to a 20-year prison sentence.
Pelayo was remanded into federal custody after entering his guilty plea and will remain detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
He was arrested last Sept. 29 at the Greyhound bus station in Albuquerque on a trip from Los Angeles to North Carolina.
Authorities say a consensual search of his baggage by federal drug agents revealed Pelayo was carrying more than a kilogram of heroin hidden in a sleeping bag.
He was later indicted and charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute.
