Rescue mission low on turkeys for annual food drive

A warm meal sounds pretty comforting on a cold day like the ones we’ve been having in Colorado Springs.

But many families won’t get the chance to have that meal, not even on Thanksgiving.

On Wednesday, we spoke with Alex Griffith while he was preparing Thanksgiving Day meals for families in need.

He said this year is the first time he won’t be with his family for the holiday.

“These last couple of years have dragged me down. I lost my wife and family, so I had a lot of motivation to get clean. Then I heard about the Springs Rescue Mission,” said Griffith.

Griffith has been in the addiction program there for two months.

“This program is saving my life,” said Griffith.

Now he wants to help the place that’s given him another chance.

“I’ve never been a part of helping the less fortunate out and helping people struggling. It warms my heart so I’m excited. However, we’re pretty low on turkeys. So we’re hoping we get some help,” said Griffith.

Springs Rescue Mission is trying to raise 750 turkeys by Nov. 15 th . That’s enough to feed 2,000 people.

It’s an annual drive, but this season the stakes are higher. The organization has promised even more families a warm meal.

“It’s critical for us to come through on our promise to local needy families,” said Stew Davis with the Springs Rescue Mission.

But only about 25 turkeys have been collected so far, just two days away from the deadline.

For now, Griffith can only hope that his own personal struggle and hard work will pay off for other families.

“I think being focused on helping people out is helping me out too,” said Griffith.

Four food drive events are planned beginning with a collection from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The rescue mission needs 750 turkeys. Four drop-off locations will be available that day:

• Springs Rescue Mission, 5 West Las Vegas St.

• Security Service Field, 4385 Tutt Blvd.

• Calvary Worship Center, 501 Castle Road

• Compassion International, 12290 Voyager Parkway
