Haircuts, health checks offered to homeless vets

Homeless veterans will be able to get clothing, toiletries, haircuts and hot meals at the annual Homeless Veterans Stand Down in Denver.

The Department of Veterans Affairs event, now in its 24th year, is taking place at the Colorado Army National Guard Armory on Thursday.

Veterans can also get medical screenings as well as counseling on benefits available through the VA.

A survey found that there are currently about 750 homeless veterans living in Colorado, with about 40 percent of them in Denver.

The Stand Down event takes its name from the military term for temporarily stopping military action to focus on one issue.
