CSU student accused of stealing ambulance

A Colorado State University student has been arrested for allegedly stealing an ambulance from campus, fleeing to nearby Loveland and crashing the vehicle into at least one road sign.

The Coloradoan reports emergency crews with Poudre Valley Hospital were treating a patient on campus early Sunday morning, and when they returned to their parking spot, their ambulance was gone.

The ambulance, which had a GPS system on board, was tracked to Loveland, and police found 18-year-old Stefan Sortland standing next to the rig wearing an EMT vest. Officers shot him with a stun gun when he refused their commands.

Sortland faces charges including aggravated vehicle theft, obstructing EMS, reckless driving, hit-and-run, criminal mischief and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The newspaper reports the patient who was treated on campus is doing OK.
