Key witness in January trial finds relief, closure
A witness credited with solidifying the prosecution’s case against Macyo January says he’s relieved a jury found January guilty.
January was convicted Tuesday of two counts of first degree murder for the deaths of a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife. January was 17 years old when he killed David Dunlap and Whitney Butler in their home on Bassett Drive in January 2013.
Frankie Meyer, who is hearing impaired, is always watching over his neighborhood. Frankie’s mom, Regina, calls him “eagle eyes.”
“He’s smart and he knows things about the neighborhood,” Regina interpreted to KRDO.
Prosecutor Jeff Lindsey praised Meyer for his brave actions the day of the crime and the months following during testimony.
“He is a brave person. He is, I think, the person who got this case to the point where Macyo January was arrested,” Lindsey said. “He saw him. He observed Macyo coming in and out of the house, taking things. He actually chased after Macyo January, a person who had just committed a double murder.”
Frankie said he sometimes wonders what would have happened if he hadn’t witnessed January at the home.
“He would continue to commit crimes and do many many bad things and people wouldn’t be able to ID him and it would take a long long time before they’d find the right person to arrest,” Frankie said.
Frankie told KRDO he felt good knowing the right person was convicted and he hopes the families of the victims will find closure.
“They’re good people and I feel connected with them,” Frankie said.
