Jury: Macyo January guilty of killing Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife
A Colorado Springs man has been convicted of two counts of first degree murder for the deaths of a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife.
Macyo January was 17-years-old when he killed David Dunlap and Whitney Butler in January 2013.
The jury began deliberating at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday (9/29/14). It took them about four hours to reach their verdict. January was found guilty of all ten counts he faced, including charges of first degree murder, automobile theft and theft.
January is scheduled to be sentenced October 22. He faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years.
Police said Dunlap and Butler walked in on a burglary in progress in their home. Police said January shot and killed them before he fled. Police located January in a friend’s home several days later.
Prosecutors told jurors January’s “signature is on every aspect of this crime.” In the prosecutors opening arguments, they said this isn’t a case of ‘who done it?’ The prosecutor went on to say January’s DNA is on the hand grip of the pistol that fired the fatal bullets.
January’s defense said he is innocent. His attorney said January was walking around the neighborhood and came across Butler’s stalled car in the middle of the street. She said January walked into the house and when he saw Dunlap and Butler dead, he ran out the back door because he didn’t want people to think he was guilty.
