Attorney general orders marriage license halt

Colorado’s attorney general has ordered a halt to the issuing of gay-marriage licenses in Boulder County.

Republican Attorney General John Suthers gave Boulder County Clerk Hillary Hall until noon Tuesday to stop issuing marriage licenses. Colorado’s constitution bans same-sex unions, and a federal decision handed down last week by the 10th Circuit in Denver has been stayed pending review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 10th Circuit ruled that states cannot ban marriages based on the genders of people participating. Hall responded by issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

In a letter dated Friday, Suthers told Hall that she must cease issuing the licenses. A spokesman for the office said Monday that Hall had not responded and that Suthers had not decided how to proceed.
