Old Stage Road could reopen in September

El Paso County’s head engineer said repair work on popular Old Stage Road near southwest Colorado Springs could be finished in three months.

Andre Brackin said county commissioners approved spending $600,000 on the work, with $450,000 being reimbursed from the federal government. The road, near the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Seven Falls, and offering spectacular views of the city, was heavily damaged during flooding from heavy rain last September.

“Essentially, what this does, it’s very critical work that has to do with drainage infrastructure on the roads,” Brackin said. “In six different locations, we’re going to replace major culverts.”

Brackin said the culverts will channel runoff under the road instead of on the road surface where washouts have occurred in the past. Paved sections of the road within the city limits also show signs of erosion and other damage.

The contractor doing the work, Brackin said, has three months to finish, allowing time for rain delays.

The road remains open for residents who live there and for others who have business in the area.
