UPDATE: Unit 6 at Drake back online, electric rate could go down in July

Colorado Springs Utilities says unit 6 at the Drake Power Plant is once again producing electricity.

The power plant had been out of commission since a fire on May 5 damaged parts of it. Units 5, 6 and 7 were damaged.

CSU increased electric rates to cover the cost of buying electricity from another source. Now that unit 6 is back online, the utility plans to propose a reduction in that increase at the July 8 city council meeting.

The increase will likely be reduced even further when unit 7 goes back online. That is expected to happen this fall.
