Former Pueblo County sheriff sheds light on Maketa situation

Lt. Jeff Kramer said Sheriff Maketa is in the office and has not left town.

Kramer also says the three women the sheriff is accused of having inappropriate relationships with haven’t taken any time off since these allegations surfaced.

Now a former sheriff who’s been in the scandal spotlight himself, tells us what he thinks about the building accusations against Maketa.

Dan Corsentino has been through what many haven’t. While serving as the sheriff of Pueblo County, he was accused of sexual misconduct and extortion.

He gave us his unique perspective on what a person in this position of power is facing.

Corsentino said he thinks Maketa has done a great job serving El Paso County and responding to the Black Forest Fire. Despite that, he says now all of Maketa’s achievements and his legacy are at stake.

“He’s weighing his political survival. He’s also weighing the accomplishments of the office and what his legacy is, and right now it’s obviously been tainted by allegations. Not every allegation is true. There’s always two sides to every story and the truth will always come out, as it did in my case,” said Corsentino.

Corsentino also says he thinks Maketa will make a statement and a decision when the investigation unfolds.

On Thursday commissioners will vote on whether they think Maketa should step down as sheriff. But they don’tmake the ultimate decision, it’s simply an on-the-record vote.

Something that Corsentino says is a strong message to the county.
