Backcountry skier rescued

Search and rescue crews have rescued a backcountry skier in Chaffee County who fell off a cliff near Heron Peak.

The skier was airlifted to St. Anthony in Denver around 4 Saturday (5/10) afternoon. High winds made it harder for the helicopter to leave.

He is in critical condition, and suffered a severe trauma to his head. The Chaffee County sheriff’s office says two men were skiing when one of them fell about 25 feet.

The Skier is from out of state.
