Warmer temperatures mean more bugs for southern Colorado

As temperatures rise, insects are hatching and making their presence known.

“Temperature has a huge effect on reproductive cycles and growth for the insects. Weather plays a huge part,” said Noah King, service supervisor with High Country Pest Control.

King said a big increase in ant population is expected first. He said this will be followed closely by flying and stinging insects, like wasps and bees.

After a snowy winter in the high country, there is plenty of snowmelt that will be headed our way as temperatures rise. That will create the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes.

“Moisture and standing water definitely plays a role in the mosquito season,” said King.

King said business for High Country Pest Control is picking up, and is expected to continue as the seasons change.

“It’s one thing to see one ant. It’s another thing to see a whole colony. When you see a colony going through your home, that’s probably when you want to call a professional like ourselves,” said King.
