Still no answers in Waldo Canyon Fire cause

Mountain Shadows residents are still waiting to find out what and who caused the Waldo Canyon Fire.

The June 2012 wildfire claimed 346 homes and two lives. Investigators, led by the Colorado Springs Police Department, have discovered the fire was human-caused, but they say they don’t know if it was set intentionally or accidentally.

“Something’s got to change,” Jenny Macomber told KRDO NewsChannel 13. “We’ve got to find some answers here and find out why.”

Macomber, whose home was damaged in the fire, said that it’s been frustrating not knowing what caused the fire, but she and her neighbors are focused on rebuilding.

“In some ways it has to be okay so you can move on,” Macomber said. “I don’t know if there’s really any closure for that. That’s a hard one. It’s just a life experience you have to learn from.”

Donald Meaney lost his home in the fire and recently moved into the home he rebuilt. He’s not surprised that investigators haven’t made any arrests, but wishes police were more forthcoming with information.

“I don’t know of information being provided, which leads people to generate their own opinions — good or bad,” Meaney said.

Some residents told KRDO NewsChannel 13 that they felt the Waldo Canyon Fire investigation is being overshadowed by the Black Forest Fire investigation.

CSPD told KRDO NewsChannel 13 Friday that the investigation is still open and there is no new information.

There is still a $100,000 reward for anyone who provides information leading to an arrest.
