Colorado Springs women injured in an avalanche in Utah

Ashleigh Nicole Cox, 21, from Colorado Springs,was hospitalized Saturday after being caught in an avalanche in American Fork Canyon.

Cox is listed in critical condition.

The avalanche happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cox was snowshoeing in steep terrain when the avalanche broke loose. The avalanche pushed her into a stream.She stayed buriedunder the snow.

She was under the snow for about 20 minutes before rescuers arrived and it took them another 20 minutes to remove her from the snow. When rescuers reached her, Cox did not have a pulse and she was not breathing. She was taken to the hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

Cox goes to school at Brigham Young University in Utah.
