Warm shelter for Black Forest Fire victims

Many people who lost homes in Black Forest have been living in campers and tents since that summer fire. What’s been rough is that much harder on freezing cold nights. That is why Crosses for Losses has been working around the clock to find a warm place for those people and their pets.

Blankets were stacked floor to ceiling at crosses for losses Thursday night. They are a necessity during this first winter freeze for Black Forest residents who lost homes this summer.

“There are people living in tents. There’s some living not in tents and just living under a tree and others in campers,” said Crosses for Losses volunteer Destiny Davis.

Michelle Andree lost her home in the fire. She is staying in a camper. She said she’s thankful crosses for losses opened their doors.

“My temperature inside my motor home is 33 degrees and so I’m just trying to keep this foster car warm and myself warm,” said Andree.

Along with warmth, Crosses for Losses had hot food and water.

“I knew I could count on them. I called them in tears and I texted Amanda and she’s been working all afternoon to help me,” said Andree.

“Somebody’s got to do something. So, hi! We’re here!” said Director of Crosses for Losses Amanda Davis.

Crosses for Losses still needs a number of things: new wool socks, hand and toe warmers, long underwear and coveralls for adults, pet food, and gas cards for fire victims. They are also accepting donations for holiday crosses. Your donations are tax deductible.

You can call 719-495-7739or stop by the location: 12490 Black Forest Road.

Crosses for losses coordinated with the director of La Foret. He paid for hotel rooms Thursday night for anyone in black forest who needs a warm place to sleep.
