US Highway 34 reopens in Big Thompson Canyon
One of the last major highways closed by the September floods is back open.
U.S. Highway 34 between Estes Park and Loveland reopened on Thursday.
The Loveland Reporter-Herald says extensive damage to homes and property is visible along the road through Big Thompson Canyon.
Gov. John Hickenlooper says all Colorado highways damaged by September’s massive floods will be reopened before Thanksgiving, ahead of the Dec. 1 goal the state had set. Colorado Highway 7 between Lyons and Allenspark is scheduled to reopen Tuesday, making it the last major highway to reopen.
About 485 miles of highways were destroyed or damaged by flooding. In all, 27 highways were closed.
