A fallen hero is honored
An emotional Wednesday morning at Fort Carson. Friends and family gather to honor a hero, Command Sergeant Major Kevin James Griffin. Building 9420 on War Fighter Drive is now a home to heroes. It’s now called the Kevin James Griffin Memorial Building. It’s the headquarters for the Fourth Infantry Brigade Combat Team, a unit Griffin proudly served with at Fort Carson.
Colonel Brian Pearl was proud to call Griffin a fellow soldier, “He is a man who stood tall. He lived as an example of what a solder should be. I have no doubt he will watch over us and impact our soldiers for years to come. Army strong, steadfast and loyal, led by love of country.”
Command Sergeant Major Griffin, two other soldiers and an Afghan civilian were killed in a suicide attack in 2012 in Afghanistan.
Lt. Col Mark Ivezaj knew Griffin for a year and served with him in Afghanistan. If the Command Sergeant Major was alive today, how would he react to a building named after him? Ivezaj told me, “I think he would be embarrassed about it. He would probably downplay it because he was a quiet guy who didn’t want any attention. It’s appropriate to have this building dedicated to him.
