New Colorado election law challenged

A new Colorado voting law allowing same-day voter registration has prompted a lawsuit from the state Libertarian Party.

Libertarians are asking a Denver judge to step in and require separate vote-counting for local races with residency deadlines that differ from the new election law. A judge will consider the request at a 2 p.m. hearing.

Libertarian Party chairman Jeff Orrok told The Denver Post that the law discriminates by setting different requirements in elections involving municipal races, local school districts and special districts.

The lawsuit accuses county clerks across the state of improperly disregarding or misinterpreting residency requirements and allowing ineligible voters to register or change their addresses.
