West Nile virus confirmed in Pueblo County

The health department says mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in both the city and county of Pueblo.

The Pueblo City-County Health Department says recent rainfall has resulted in higher mosquito populations and a higher risk for humans.

“It is important individuals take precaution to avoid the West Nile virus, as more mosquitoes are in Pueblo after the recent rains. Mosquitoes from Pueblo have tested positive for West Nile Virus again this year.” said Dr. Christine Nevin-Woods, public health director of the Pueblo City-County Health Department. She added, “So far, no human cases have been confirmed in Pueblo, let’s work together to prevent this.”

West Nile virus develops in the human body within 5-14 days after a bite from an infected mosquito. All forms of West Nile virus can have serious symptoms and complications including fever, meningitis and encephalitis, and have potential for causing long-term illness and disability.
