Sandbags from Olympic event available Saturday

With rain in the forecast, the city of Colorado Springs will be giving away sandbags to families living near the Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar Saturday.

The 190 tons of sand that will be used to fill the bags is coming from the Olympic-sized volleyball pit that was set up on Tejon Street during the Olympic Downtown Celebration on July 26.

Saturday’s sandbag giveaway is happening at the Verizon Wireless Building, 2424 Garden of the Gods Road, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Volunteers will fill sandbags and help people load them into their cars.

You’re asked to enter the Verizon Wireless parking lot off of 30th Street and Flying W Ranch Road.

A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the Waldo Canyon and Black Forest burn scars for Saturday afternoon and evening. Click here for your updated StormTracker 13 forecast.
