Bennet tapped for Farm Bill negotiations
Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet is one of 12 senators who have been tapped for negotiating the thorny Farm Bill.
But Congress left for a five-week recess Friday with no meetings planned between senators and House members who can’t agree on food stamp funding.
The Democratic Senate has approved a Farm Bill that cuts food stamp funding but doesn’t eliminate it. The Republican House is pursuing a version with no funding for food stamps. A group of GOP lawmakers is planning a separate food stamp bill that would cut the program by about $4 billion a year.
A spokesman for Bennet said “it doesn’t make sense” to leave food stamps out of the Farm Bill. He said staff members would work on the bill during the summer recess.
