A new beginning & sign of hope concert

A year ago to the day 347 families in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood were losing their homes to the flames from the Waldo Canyon fire. Today, a free concert showcases just how far the neighborhood has come.

“To be here today is pretty amazing and feeling like, I wouldn’t call it a celebration for us, but we are really happy, some of us, to be at this point,” said Myrna Candreia.

Candreia lost her home in the fire. She is one of the main organizers of the large concert that brought in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Children’s Chorale, and the Flying W Wranglers.

Hundreds packed Mountain Shadows Park, including firefighters who last year were battling flames…this year they were eating ice cream.

“It’s nice to see the smiles,” said Catamount Wildland Fire Team Fire Chief Michael Myers.

Organizers believe this event can also help those affected by the Black Forest fire, and bring them hope of what time can do.

“Hopefully they can draw on our experience and it might be a little bit easier,” said organizer and volunteer Bill Brown.
