Abused horses rehabbed, put up for adoption

Four severely malnourished horses rescued in April are on the road to recovery.

In mid-April, Pueblo Animal Services Animal Law Enforcement impounded four horses from a residence in Boone.

Jet, Cash, Lois and Shadow were all very thin and neglected by their former owner. Their ribs were clearly visible through their winter coats.

“We’ve been expecting an increase in the number of horses we impound for neglect due to the rising hay prices and a decrease in demand for horses,” said Director of Animal Law Enforcement Joe Stafford. “Horses are very expensive animals to keep, and we encourage all horse owners to stockpile hay, negotiate with suppliers or perhaps even rehome a horse before they get to the point where we have to intervene for the sake of the animal. It’s also important to make sure you have the resources to take on the extensive cost of care of bringing a new horse home.”

All horse rescue partners for Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) and PAS are currently at capacity, so after receiving medical treatment, including dental work for Lois, Shadow and Lois traveled to HSPPR in Colorado Springs to join Cammie, another horse impounded in a separate neglect case . Jet and Cash stayed at PAS, where they received medical treatment and were gelded.

Though still thin, all horses have been medically approved for adoption, and Shadow has already found his new home. Jet and Cash are available for adoption from PAS; Cammie and Lois are available at HSPPR.

Please contact PAS at 719-544-3005 x5424 or HSPPR at 719-302-8712 for information on adopting or to make a donation toward the care of these horses.
