Mom wants justice in son’s death

A mother is mourning her son and fears she may never have closure.

Kathy Berumen’s 35-year-old son Rick Mullenex was killed in a hit-and-run off of West 29th Street and Country Club drive in Pueblo nearly a month ago.

“You envision your child laying on the side of the road, critically injured and that person casually driving off,” said Berumen.

The person responsible hasn’t been found.

“We don’t have closure. I’ve lost my son we can never replace him,” said Berumen.

Police said they work on the case every day.

“We haven’t put this on the back burner. In fact, one of the officers has a picture of the truck we are looking for as his screen saver,” said Sgt. Chris Noeller.

Berumen hopes the person responsible will come forward.

“My child was just kind of left like road debris or roadkill. I just don’t know how to explain it. I just can’t imagine other human being doing that, leaving someone like that. They are still out there in the community and my son will not ever be given the opportunity to see his family again,” said Berumen.

Berumen said they decided to donate his organs to help others. She said she knew he would have wanted that.

Police don’t want drivers to focus on whether the truck is an extended cab. They want drivers to focus on the color, which is maroon with a silver stripe. It’s a Chevy pickup from 1988 to 1999. There could be damage to the driver’s side.
