Colorado Springs Death Penalty Attorney Joins Holmes Case

Retired Colorado Springs Prosecutor Dan Zook will lead the case against the Aurora theater shooting suspect.

In Colorado judicial circles, Zook is widely considered one of, if not the, top death penalty prosecutors in our state.

Wednesday, 18th Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler announced Zook will lead the team prosecuting James Holmes.

Although he hasn’t announced it, this move is a clear indicator the D.A. plans to go for the death penalty in the case.

Holmes is scheduled to enter a plea in March.

Zook served as a top state prosecutor in Colorado Springs for a total of 23 years between 1985 and 2011. During a stint in private practice, Zook defended a suspect accused of first-degree murder.
