Florence community mourns mayor’s death

The city of Florence is coming to grips with losing their mayor. Charles Giebler, 52, was found dead in his home Friday afternoon.

His death remains under investigation, but police don’t think foul play was involved. City Manager Mike Patterson said Giebler had heart problems, and that could’ve been a factor in his death.

“I just didn’t believe it,” City Manager Mike Patterson said. “No way, it couldn’t have happened.”

“I was just really shocked and saddened” Florence resident Pete DeRego said. “I’d heard really good things about the mayor and all the work that he was doing to put Florence on the map.”

Those who knew him said Giebler was always busy and active. They said he volunteered in the community and showed his support for the local businesses.

“He cared about this community,” Mayor Pro Tem Keith Ore said. “He cared about giving back to this community a lot.”

Mayor Giebler owned and co-owned several businesses in the community, including the Smashing Good Guitar and the Main Street Grille and Bakery.

Now city leaders must decide what comes next for Florence.

Patterson said the city council will post the mayor’s vacancy, and any Florence resident can apply for the position. Council members will likely choose someone in mid-February.
