EOD Tech with big impact in SoCo

A mix of guts and pride is part of the mix for our Wear Red Friday Hero. Staff Sgt Mathew Kimberling is with the 21st Space Wing. He is an explosive ordnance tech at Peterson Air Force Base.

Mathew has disabled at least 130 ied’s been on more than 300 combat missions. I asked him about his experiences in combat and his role in saving lives, “You don’t know how many lives you’ve saved. It’s just the potential. You don’t know if a vehicle would have driven by and blown up or how many airmen or soldiers would have been killed.”

302nd EOD Tech, Master Sgt Ross Kurashima feels Mathew is a person who gives a lot personally and professionally, “On the professional side of the house he contributes. On the personal side, he also contributes.”

Staff Sgt Kimberling believes it’s important to volunteer and give back to the community. He likes to help with Habitat for Humanity. He used to be in construction before joining the Air Force, nine years ago. Mathew talked about how volunteering puts a little spring in your step, “One of my airman and I volunteered for the Restore store and ended up moving a mountain of tile all day long. At the end of the day, when you’ve been working all day long and you’re sweating and got a good workout, you can say, wow, what a good job.”

That’s why Staff Sgt Mathew Kimberling is our Wear Red Friday Hero. If you have someone you’d like to nominate, go to our homepage and scroll down to Wear Red Friday Heroes on the right side of the page.
