Hundreds of emergency responders get training at UCCS

Hundreds of emergency responders from all across the country are getting training through a variety of classes at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The Colorado Wildland Fire & Incident Management Academy is hosting the classes.

Derek Wheeler is with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. He said training allows firefighters to share their experiences and expertise with one another.

There were also classes for those training to be incident commanders.

Brian Ayers was coordinating a mock disaster exercise for a group of students on Thursday.

The mock scenario was the bombing of the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla.

Volunteers posed as dispatchers and emergency personnel. Students on the incident management team had to coordinate all that information and manage the disaster.

The academy runs a week of classes biannually. There are classes available in January and June in different cities.
