Arrest made in string of armed robberies

Colorado Springs police arrested a man Sunday morning accused of three armed robberies in Colorado Springs and two armed robberies in Manitou Springs.

28-year-old Anthony Powell is accused of robbing two hotels and one 7-Eleven convenience store at gunpoint late Saturday night.

These holdups also appear to be connected to two armed robberies earlier in the evening in Manitou Springs at a Days Inn and Loaf N Jug.

Shortly before midnight, officers spotted a white SUV, with a similar description as the suspect vehicle, abandoned near Airport and Academy. Items inside the SUV matched items that were stolen in the robberies, police said.

Later Sunday morning, someone called to report a stolen vehicle, matching the suspect vehicle. Further investigation led officers to Powell.

Powell was taken into custody and will be held at CJC pending bond. He is charged by CSPD with three armed robberies and by Manitou Springs PD with two armed robberies. Police say there may be another suspect and additional charges are pending.
