Skydiver hurt in Fremont County
A Colorado Springs woman was injured sky diving Saturday when she lost control of her parachute, Fremont County officials said.
Investigators said Erika Shields, 26, landed in a ravine a half-mile east of the designated landing site at the Fremont County Airport.
Officials said she was wearing a helmet. She was conscious and talking to rescuers as they airlifted her to Penrose Hospital, officials said.
A representatives for Penrose Hospital said Shields is in stable condition.
Shieldstold officials she had skydived about seven times before this jump.
Investigators saidShields’parachute had fully deployed, but she was having trouble grasping one of the steering controls.
Witnesses said two instructors from High Sky Adventures also jumped from the same plane, but were unable to help Shields as she had drifted off course.
On Oct. 13, 2012, another skydiver was injured during a night jump with High Sky Adventures.
On April 1, 2012, 35-year-old Jeremy Worell of Crested Butte was killed and instructor Greg Whitehurst, 28, of Fountain was seriously injured during a tandem jump with Sky Dive Colorado, another skydiving company based at the Fremont County Airport.
