Dog rescue group gets special helping hands

Students at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind spent their Friday morning volunteering at the National Mill Dog Rescue in Peyton.

It’s part of their community service theme for the month of December. The students are donating every Monday and Friday to a community organization.

Many of the students have expressed a desire for a career working with animals, so school leaders thought the rescue organization was the perfect fit.

“Some of the students would like to take a dog home,” said guidance counselor Joseph Ryan, using American Sign Language.

The students spent the morning cleaning out pens, feeding the dogs and performing other maintenance.

In addition to these volunteer days, community members are also visiting the school to give students information about other nonprofit organizations.

The National Mill Dog Rescue is a Colorado Springs-based nonprofit that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes retired commercial breeding dogs from puppy mills.
