Soldiers welcomed home from Afghanistan

Thirty-six soldiers arrived home Saturday night after spending nine months in Afghanistan.

They are all members of the 764 Ordnance Company.

During their deployment, they have completed more than 600 missions and destroyed 215 improvised explosive devices.

Families gathered in the Special Events Center to welcome them home.

“All the nerves are gone, just waiting,” said Chelsea Shumer. She was waiting for her husband, Elliot Shumer, to return from his third deployment. She said this was Elliot’s first time in Afghanistan.

Sonya Page was also waiting for her husband to arrive. The couple will celebrate their third anniversary soon. “I’m excited, nervous and anxious,” she said.

Two homecoming ceremonies scheduled for Sunday were cancelled for the time being due to cancelled flights.
