CSPD investigates shooting on Academy Blvd.

Colorado Springs police said a 22-year-old man was found shot in the chest Thursday on northbound Academy Boulevard across from Citadel Mall.

According to police, the unidentified man was alone in his Dodge Charger around 5:45 p.m. when the shot was fired. Another driver who saw the Charger stopped in traffic, parked in front of it to check on the victim.

Police said they believe the gunshot was either self-inflicted or accidental, and are investigating the incident. Police said the man underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital, and don’t expect his wound to be life-threatening.

As of late Thursday night, the victim’s name had not been released and his condition was not available.

The incident backed up traffic at the end of rush hour around the busy Academy-Platte Avenue intersection. Police said a four-vehicle crash, on southbound Academy next to the Charger, happened while drivers were distracted by the scene. No injuries were reported.
